1. Overview

Notes stay as standard UTF-8 Markdown files in a local folder you can edit in Vim, VS Code or bash.

Category: Knowledge & Office.

2. Version and scope assessed

Version assessed: Official JSON Canvas source commit 456f843cb293df4f4ab1763e22ccb46a80b307c8.

3. Overall determination

5. Fundamental requirements

Fundamental requirements for Obsidian
RequirementStatus
E1 Independent access to essential information✓ Pass
E2 Practicable exit and migration? Not Verified
E3 Independent interpretation and recovery? Not Verified
E4 Continuing authority and custody over already-created work✓ Pass
E5 Governability of consequential actions? Not Verified

6. Evidence and verification

7. Migration and recovery

Native storage format: Local Directory of Plain Markdown (.md).

Synchronization or runtime model: Decoupled (Syncthing, Git, or paid first-party sync).

Example export or inspection command (not verified against any particular version or data set): cp -r ~/Vault /backup/plain-markdown/

8. Architectural strengths

Established strengths and their scope are recorded in the evidence and assessment findings on this page.

9. Architectural limitations

10. Assessment findings and remaining work

Verification scenario: Move a vault without Obsidian and compare links, embedded media, canvas, plugins, metadata, and settings.

What may invalidate an overconfident claim: Markdown content can survive while plugin-dependent knowledge and Canvas interactions may not. Because the core binary is proprietary, functional longevity and E4 depend on whether essential workflows are portable to independent Markdown tools rather than requiring community patching of the closed executable.

Two-assessor protocol scope note: Pre-registered under the knowledge_notes domain profile as a boundary case contrasting proprietary software license restrictions against plain-text data portability. Assessors independently test whether Dataview queries, Canvas files (.canvas), and internal wikilinks remain usable in a non-Obsidian Markdown environment.

Evidence update: 23 October 2026

Assessment follow-up: These bounded findings are incorporated into the evidence above. Eligibility and principle ratings are deliberately unchanged; their reconciliation and any blank-status fixes are deferred to the next pass. Reproduction details and retained inputs are in evidence/third-pass/batch-6/.

Rating reconciliation: 24 October 2026

E3 and E5 remain Not Verified for the existing declared scope. Longevity and Transparency and Control are Not assessed pending their required minimums. Sovereignty is also Not assessed because the required access/exit/custody minimums are not all established. The prior E2 Pass is withdrawn; its essential-record migration comparison remains incomplete. This is a targeted evidence decision, not a finding that the product fails. Existing E1, E4 and Locality findings were not re-certified.

Remaining: A complete representative vault including attachments/Bases/plugins/settings, semantic rendering, recovery snapshots and sync conflicts, trash/rename controls and cross-version behavior. E5 needs effective plugin/transmission and sync/rename/trash authorization, inspectability and recovery boundaries.

Next without installing locally: Inspect a synthetic vault including assets, Canvas references, Bases/plugin data/settings and expected link/property meanings; seek version-matched official control documentation with robust independent corroboration or recorded conflict/trash recovery.

The individual decision and provenance are retained in evidence/rating-reconciliation/batch-7/. Overall: Insufficient evidence.

Individually reconciled in rating batch 7 on 24 October 2026. E3/E5 remain Not Verified for explicit missing coverage; dependent unsupported findings corrected. Previously resolved questions are retained, not counted again. E1/E4/Locality were not re-certified by this targeted review. The assessment procedure is described in the methodology.
